Application
You may apply for the Health Information Management program if you meet the
following criteria:
- You have a Canadian secondary school diploma (grade 12) or
equivalent, or proof of completion of either a diploma or degree program from a
recognized Canadian post-secondary institution;
- You have successfully completed an Access course at the intermediate
level (30 hours in length). This is not mandatory to apply for or start
the program but must be completed by the
end of the student’s first year;
- You are employed in a health information management department or work
in a health care environment a minimum of 50 hours a month and have a
letter of support from a certified health information management professional;
- You have arranged to complete the Practical Experience component
preferably in an acute care facility that provides a range of patient care
services with the support of a qualified health information management
professional;
- You can provide a written commitment from the certified health
information management professional that you will be available to complete all
the program requirements for the Practical Experience;
- You have access to a personal computer with a hard disk, are
familiar with basic data processing applications and have unlimited internet
access.
Selection will be based on the applicant’s education, relevant work experience
and current job responsibilities and skills. Success in the program
requires good reading and writing skills. Applicants who are weak in these areas
should upgrade these skills prior to applying for admission.
CHA Learning does not provide or arrange Workplace Safety and Insurance
/ Workers’ Compensation coverage. CHA strongly encourages students to purchase
personal disability and critical injury insurance from their private home or
renter insurance provider.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
A prospective HIM student may apply for a Prior Learning Assessment and
Recognition (PLAR). This review allows an assessor to determine whether
prior learning gained through previous recognized courses, work and life
experiences can meet the content or requirements of a program. For more

The MED2020 Health Care Software Inc. Award
$350
Awarded annually to the two students in Health Information
Management, Years One and Two, who have completed all assignments and the field
placement on schedule and achieved the highest average for course work during
the year.

The 3M Canada Company Award
$300
Awarded annually to the two students in the Health Information
Management program, Years One and Two, who have completed all assignments and
the field placement on schedule and achieved the highest average for course work
during the year.

The Manitoba Health Information Management Association Award
$250
Awarded annually to the two Manitoba students in the Health
Information Management Program, Years One and Two who obtain the highest average
for the course work for the year. The membership year of the Manitoba Health
Information Management Association (MHIMA) is from May 1 to April 30. To qualify
for the $250 award, CHA students must be a current student member of MHIMA
during the applicable award year. MHIMA student membership fee is $15 per year
while enrolled in the CHA program.

The Health Information Management Association of Alberta Award
$350 plus one year HIMAA membership
Awarded annually to the two Alberta resident students in the
Health Information Management program, Year Ones and Two, who have completed all
assignments and the field placement on schedule and achieved the highest average
for course work during the year.
