Education Consultants and their Role

Education consultants (EC) are experienced healthcare professionals with a commitment to helping others build their knowledge and skills. CHA Learning matches education consultants with students registered in its programs to assist them to work through their courses.

The interest and support that education consultants provide to students by means of telephone visits, comments on assignments, and face-to-face meetings have a great influence on students’ motivation, learning and success.

Education consultants receive copies of the program study guides, answer guides and, in some programs, textbooks. Students submit seven to eight assignments to their education consultants for marking, usually one every three or four weeks. Education consultants mark and grade the assignments, return the assignments to students with their comments and submit the student marks online. Students submit practical experience and field placement reports, major projects and examinations directly to CHA Learning.

Students increasingly represent the full continuum of health services: acute care, long term care, public health, mental health, social services, community services and home care. Program structure and content are developed accordingly.

Students are matched with an education consultant by the beginning of the academic year and are notified at that time. Students may be assigned education consultants from communities and provinces other than their own.

CHA Learning provides education consultants with an honorarium for each study unit they mark, and reimburses them for telephone and postage expenses.

Guidelines for Education Consultants

  • New education consultants are usually assigned to only one program and no more than two or three students until they are familiar with the process and time required for working with students.
  • CHA Learning may not be able to match all education consultants with students in a particular year.
  • Education consultants whose circumstances change and who cannot continue to act effectively as ECs should contact CHA Learning as soon as possible. CHA Learning will match students with another EC so that neither the student nor the EC is penalized.
