The Risk Management and Safety in Health Services program is designed for healthcare professionals whose responsibilities include risk management activities as well as those whose activities cover areas where risk is a factor: direct care providers, clinical practitioners, supervisors and managers, team leaders, executives, patient representatives, quality managers, patient safety officers, and risk managers.
This program provides a thorough introduction to health care risk management, as it should be practiced in current health care environments from hospitals, to home care and home support organizations, community-based services, residential and long term care within the continuum of health services.
To apply, students must be working in a healthcare orgnization.
Internet and E-mail Access
Students must have internet and e-mail access (either at home or at work) for communication with CHA Learning and their education consultants.
Course Components
The program includes seven home study units, a five-day Intramural Session in Ottawa and a final examination. Attendance at the Intramural Session is mandatory.

- The risky business of health care
- Brief history of risk management in health care
- Enterprise risk management
- Relation to other critical health care management functions
- Risk information sources and loss control processes
- Special topics in risk management
- Clinical and sector risks in health care systems

Certificate
Graduates receive a certificate in Risk Management and Safety issued by the Canadian Healthcare Association.
Course Recognition
Athabasca University

Graduates of the program are eligible for 3 credits at the 400 level in the Bachelor of Health Administration program at Athabasca University (www.athabascau.ca). Athabasca University is a publicly funded institution of the Province of Alberta that reports to the government through the Minister of Advanced Education and Career Development. It offers a wide range of programs through distance education.
CSMLS
The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science grants Continuing Education credits for Risk Management.
CAMRT
The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists grants professional education credits for Risk Management.

Accreditation Canada recognizes that health care providers would benefit from training in risk management issues. The Risk Management and Safety in Health Services course provides appropriate training.

Awarded annually to the Risk Management and Safety in Health Services student who achieves the highest grade on the program’s “Best Practices” paper.
