Student Testimonial

"The Long Term Care Management program has enhanced my knowledge, skills and critical analysis to an amazing level.  The last year has been a rewarding challenge being enrolled in the program and taking on the position of Director of Care/Administrator to meet the Ministry of Health legislation... I have utilized the knowledge I learned in the LTCM course to inspire all my staff and engage them to become what we are known for today, an inspired team effort. Thank you for providing the Long Term Care Management course."

Internet and E-mail Access

Students must have internet and e-mail access (either at home or at work) for communication with CHA Learning and their education consultants.

Course Components

LTCM has three components.

A. LTCM I (Year One)

The conceptual framework for LTCM, Year One is long term care / continuing care as an essential element in the continuum of health services. Students will examine the pillars of the long term care system from an evolutionary context. The knowledge gained from a big picture understanding of long term care will be supplemented with examination of specific challenges relating to areas such as ethics, education, and innovation.

This component includes seven home-study units, a research paper, a five-day Intramural Session in Ottawa and a final examination. Attendance at the Intramural Session is mandatory.

The study units include the following topics:

  • Evolution and funding of the long term care system
  • Community-based care
  • Home care
  • Facility-based long term care
  • Mental health services
  • Ethics and long term care
  • Current issues and challenges

B. LTCM II (Year Two)

The Long Term Care Management Year Two program is the same as the Health Services Management Year Two program.

The conceptual framework for LTCM II is the management competencies identified by the Canadian College of Health Leaders.

This component includes eight study units, a leadership project, and a final examination. The textbooks are supplemented with current readings from journals.

The study units include the following topics:

  • Planning and the internal environment
  • Planning and the external environment
  • Compliance with standards
  • Organizing and staffing
  • Directing
  • Controlling information and financial systems
  • Controlling and quality management
  • Managing change

C. University Component

The University requirement is the same as for the Health Services Management program.

Students in Long Term Care Management are required to demonstrate learning skills at a university level.

Students already meet this requirement if they have successfully completed a degree level course (one year in length or two semesters in length) at a recognized university; students must attach a photocopy of their transcript to their application for LTCM.

Other LTCM students are required to successfully complete a degree level course through a recognized Canadian university (a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada); at a degree level (not a certificate level) and in the fields of health services and sciences, management, administration, business, commerce, or organizational theory and behaviour. A number of Canadian universities offer such courses through distance education. Students have five years from registering into a program to complete this requirement.
